    The Mother-Daughter Book Club

Looking for new ways to bond with your daughter? Here are several reasons why a mother-daughter book club is a great way to build culture and nurture relationships:

    1. The basic ‘academic’ learning that takes place. Your daughter will learn new words as they read more books and increase their vocabulary. You might even surprise yourself with words you didn’t know. Sentence structure, grammar and punctuation will also improve because you’re continuously reading books. Reading together also helps with comprehension skills, as a parent you can ask detailed questions about the story and see if your daughter is understanding what she reads. This also allows their minds to be creative.

    2. Talking deeper, getting deeper. As your daughter gets older and progresses to more advanced books with more serious themes such as relationships, death, societal issues etc, try not to avoid them. Use this as an opportunity to discuss sensitive topics in a safe environment. Facing these topics together grows your relationship on a deeper level and gives you the chance to discuss difficult themes in a healthy context.

    3. Taking your relationship from strength to strength. Starting a mother-daughter book club is a great activity to stay connected and form a strong bond. The possibilities are endless. You can start it in their tween years, carry it onto their teen years and even when they leave home. You can even expand your book club and include other family members or friends to join in.

    4. Learning commitment and discipline. A mother-daughter book club is also a great way to teach your daughter about commitment and discipline. It can be hard to find the time to read, especially when life gets busy. But when you make a commitment together, it’s important to teach the value of sticking to what you say/promised.

    How to get started

Step 1: Choose a selection of booksthat you both are excited to read! Check below for a list of books that might interest you.

Step 2: Set a realistic goal. Don’t have that much time on your hands? Take as much time as you need to finish the book. If you want to get through more books, try and aim for 1 book per month. Whatever suits both of your lifestyles.

Step 3: Read the first 2 chapters of the book together and ask questions after each chapter. For the rest of the chapters, read them individually and ask questions as you go along. Schedule a specific time to sit down and discuss what you have recently read.

Step 4: Schedule a cafe date. Make it a more special moment when you share each other’s thoughts and highlights of the book. Take your daughter out to a favorite cafe and just enjoy chatting. It’s something you both can look forward to.
