Praying for our children’s friendships
When God created human beings, He knew that we needed community and friendship in our lives. Cultivating good friendships are vital to every single person. Healthy friendships allow us to share our lives, the good parts and the bad parts. They keep us accountable to our word, they keep us company when we feel lonely, and they encourage us to be the best person we can be.
“The LORD God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone.” – Genesis 2:18
Praying for our children to be a good friend to others is important. Doing so can also encourage them to make wise choices when choosing their friends. Here are 5 things to pray for your child’s friendships.
1. Pray for your child’s mind to make wise choices regarding close friendships
Praying for wisdom is critical because friends can influence our daily decisions. A friend can either build your child up or tear them down. They will have an effect on your child’s choices and it’s important to use wisdom in every friendship.
2. Pray for your child’s love to go beyond the surface of superficial friendship
Friendship is a lot about supporting each other and learning to forgive each other when things go wrong. This world can get lonely. Pray for your child to nourish their friendship with a love that goes beyond superficial friendship, that they may be there for their friends through the good times and the bad times.
“A real friend is one who walks in when the rest of the world walks out.” – Walter Winchell
3. Pray for your child’s heart to understand that they are never alone
We all have a friend in Jesus. He will never leave them nor forsake them. He will stand by them through everything. Pray that your child will see this and understand that even in times of loneliness, they’ve always got a friend in Jesus.
4. Pray for your child’s spirit to be friendly and compassionate
Being friendly and compassionate is important when making friends. Pray for your child to be a good friend to others with love and care.
5. Pray for your child’s mouth not to participate gossiping
Friendships can be broken in a single conversation. Gossip is not good for any of the parties involved. Talking poorly about others can separate friends rather than bring them closer together. Pray for your child to be aware of gossip and to turn away from it.
Choosing Good Friends
Good friends are something we all need. It does not come easy and we must work hard to nourish our relationships but they are worth it. Just like us, our children must learn to be a good friend to others and they must learn to choose good friends.
